Understanding the Application Process

Applying for Graduate School admission is simple once you know the process. It's helpful to familiarize yourself with the necessary steps and gather required documents before you initiate the application process. And remember, admission requirements vary by program, so be sure to review the necessary steps for your particular program. Let's get started.

  1. Check the admissions requirements for the program in which you are interested.
  2. Budget for application fees, entrance exams, transcripts, etc.
  3. Determine if you need to take an entrance exam and, if so, which one. Study, and take a practice test so you know what areas you will need to focus on while studying.
  4. Register for and take the entrance exam (if required).
  5. If your primary language is not English, complete one of the approved English language proficiency exams.
  6. Solicit letters of recommendation.
  7. Begin investigating sources of funding and complete your FAFSA.
  8. Write your statement of purpose or goals.
  9. Request transcripts from all academic institutions you have attended. Please note that if you are submitting transcripts from an institution that is located outside the USA, you will be required to have them evaluated.
  10. Submit your application.
