Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance.
The College of Charleston is committed to promoting and protecting a learning and living environment where civil discourse, respect for the individual and appreciation for the diversity of human experiences are valued as compelling academic interests. The College of Charleston is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex and provides many resources to students, faculty, and staff to address concerns.
Reports of sexual discrimination and/or harassment may be submitted by any person to the Title IX Coordinator, or another of the designated officials below, or to the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. Reports may be submitted by email, mail, phone or in person. The Title IX Coordinator is in the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.
Who Are the College of Charleston's Title IX Coordinators?
The following College officials have been designated Title IX Coordinators and are located in the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs:
- Leya Nelson, Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, is the Title IX Coordinator.
- Margaret Nyland, Assisstant Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, is the lead Title IX investigator.
Additionally, the following employees have been designated Title IX Coordinators and are located outside of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs:
- Kate Tiller, the Senior Associate AD for Student-Athlete Success, is a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for student athletes and employees within the Athletics Department and can be reached at (843) 953-3660 or tillerk@cofc.edu.
- Ann Almasi-Bush, the Dean of Students and the Associate Vice President for Student Well-being, is a Deputy Title IX Coordinator here at the College and can be reached at (843) 953-5522 or almasibusha@cofc.edu.
Together, the team educates students and employees on important topics such as how to identify and report sex discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, College of Charleston policies and procedures, and on and off-campus resources.

Coordinators will provide information on all options for complaint resolution. They will work closely with the Office of Victim Services, Office of Public Safety, as well as other offices on campus to educate the College of Charleston campus community about Title IX.
Filing a Formal Complaint Under Title IX
