We look for applicants who are committed to supporting multilingual learners and creating inclusive learning environments. The application process is designed to help you share your goals, experience and readiness for graduate-level study.
  • Application Requirements

    Before applying to the M.A.T. in Multilingual Learners program, ensure you meet the following criteria:

    • Earned bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Undergraduate GPA of 2.750 or better. GPA requirement may be waived by the program director with consent of the program admission committee.

  • Application Process

    To apply, complete the online application and submit the following materials:

    • Online Graduate Admission Application and application fee.
    • Official Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
      (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for admission consideration)
    • Statement of Purpose describing why you seek to pursue the M.A.t. program and a career in teaching. 
    • Professional Résumé
    • Two Recommentations
    • Official English proficiency exam scores if your primary language is not English

From language development and cultural context to instruction, assessment and clinical practice, the M.A.T. in Multilingual Learners provides a structured path to building expertise in working with multilingual students.
  • Educational Foundations

    Build a strong understanding of how students learn across developmental stages, with an emphasis on language, culture, and inclusive educational practices.

    EDEE 525 Advanced Foundations of Language and Literacies Development: Birth-Grade 6
    Examines language and literacy development across early childhood and elementary years, including factors that influence multilingual learners.

    EDFS 501 Introduction to Exceptional Children and Youth
    Introduces the characteristics and needs of exceptional learners, including identification and support strategies across educational settings.

    EDFS 654 Human Growth and Development
    Explores principles of human development and their connection to teaching and learning across the lifespan.

    EDFS 672 Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Education
    Focuses on the social, cultural, and legal contexts of educating linguistically diverse learners in PK–12 settings.

    MTLA 648 Teaching Content Area and Disciplinary Literacies
    Develops strategies for teaching literacy across subject areas, with attention to multilingual and multimodal learning.

  • Multilingual Learners Advanced Coursework

    Develop practical strategies and deeper expertise in language acquisition, instruction, and assessment for multilingual learners.

    EDFS 670 Principles and Strategies for Teaching Multilingual Learners (PK–12)
    Introduces instructional methods and strategies to support second language acquisition in diverse classrooms.

    EDFS 671 Teaching Reading and Writing to PK–12 Multilingual Learners
    Builds approaches for teaching literacy to multilingual learners across grade levels and content areas.

    EDFS 673 Assessing Student Performance
    Examines assessment practices and data use to support instruction and measure learning for multilingual students.

    EDFS 704 Practicum in the Instruction of Multilingual Learners
    Provides supervised field experience working alongside educators to plan and deliver instruction for multilingual learners.

    LALE 601 Applied Linguistics
    Explores key concepts in applied linguistics and their relevance to second language teaching and learning.

    LALE 603 Second Language Acquisition
    Examines theories and factors that influence how additional languages are learned across contexts.

  • Culminating Experience (9 credit hours)

    Apply your learning in a full-time classroom setting, demonstrating readiness to teach and support multilingual learners.

    EDFS 793 Clinical Practice in Multilingual Learner Education
    Engages candidates in full-time teaching with increasing responsibility, supported by mentorship and ongoing supervision.
