The M.Ed. in Languages is designed for working educators who want to deepen theri understanding of language acquisition and instruction. With emphases in Spanish and Multilingual Learners/ESOL, the program focuses on linguistics, cross-cultural competence and practical teaching strategies you can apply in your classroom.

We look for applicants who are committed to supporting multilingual learners and creating inclusive learning environments. The application process is designed to help you share your goals, experience and readiness for graduate-level study.
  • Application Requirements

    Before applying to the M.Ed. in Languages program, ensure you meet the following criteria:

    • Earned bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Undergraduate GPA of 2.500 or better. 
    • For the Spanish emphasis, a bachelor's degree in Spanish or equivalent is required

  • Application Process

    To apply, complete the online application and submit the following materials:

    • Online Graduate Admission Application and application fee.
    • Official Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
      (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for admission consideration)
    • Statement of Goals describing why you seek to pursue a master's degree in languages. 
    • Two Letters of Recommentations
    • Official English proficiency exam scores if your primary language is not English

The M.Ed. in Languages curriculum combines core study in language acquisition and research with specialized coursework in your chosen emphasis. You'll deepen your content knowledge, explore effective instructional approaches and complete a capstone experience that reflects your professional growth.

    EDFS 635 Educational Research
    Introduces research design and methods, with practical experience in conducting and evaluating educational research.

    LALE 601 Applied Linguistics
    Explores key concepts in applied linguistics and their relevance to second language teaching and learning.

    LALE 603 Second Language Acquisition
    Examines theories and factors that influence how additional languages are learned across contexts.

  • Spanish Emphasis

    Deepen your expertise in Spanish language, linguistics, and cultural studies while developing advanced teaching practices.

    LALE 602 Advanced Language Teaching Methodology
    Applies current research in language pedagogy to the design of lessons, units, and instructional strategies.

    Examines Latin American cultures and contexts to enrich teaching and curriculum design.

    SPAN 624 U.S. Latinos/As Literatures and Cultures
    Studies U.S. Latino/a literature and cultural expression within historical and contemporary contexts.

    SPAN 630 Seminar in Hispanic Studies
    Provides advanced, topic-based study in Hispanic literature, linguistics, or culture.

    SPAN 681 Spanish Linguistics for Language Teachers
    Applies linguistic concepts to the teaching and learning of Spanish across proficiency levels.

    SPAN 682 Spanish Oral Proficiency
    Develops advanced speaking skills and understanding of proficiency standards for language learners.

    SPAN 698 Independent Study
    Offers guided, individualized study on a selected topic in Spanish language or culture.

    Electives (6 credit hours)

    Develop practical strategies and deeper expertise in language acquisition, instruction, and assessment for multilingual learners.

    EDFS 670 Principles and Strategies for Teaching Multilingual Learners (PK–12)
    Introduces instructional methods and strategies to support second language acquisition in diverse classrooms.

    EDFS 671 Teaching Reading and Writing to PK–12 Multilingual Learners
    Builds approaches for teaching literacy to multilingual learners across grade levels and content areas.

    EDFS 672 Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Education
    Focuses on the social, cultural, and legal contexts of educating linguistically diverse learners in PK–12 settings.

    EDFS 673 Assessing Student Performance
    Examines assessment practices and data use to support instruction and measure learning for multilingual students.

    EDFS 674 Linguistics for Multilingual Learner Program Specialists
    Provides a foundation in English grammar and linguistics to inform effective language instruction.
