  • Application Requirements

    Before applying to the M.A. in Communication program, ensure you meet the following criteria:

    • Hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. 
    • Complete undergraduate or graduate coursework in Communication or a related discipline. 
  • Application Process

    To apply, complete the online application and submit the following materials:

    • Online Graduate Admission Application and application fee.
    • Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
      (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for admission consideration)
    • Writing Sample: A research-based writing sample demonstrating your academic and research capabilities.
    • Statement of Purpose: Why you are a good fit for the MCOM program at the College of Charleston and why is the MCOM program a good fit for you.
    • Two Recommentation Letters demonstrating your academic and research capabilities.

The curriculum includes foundational coursework in theory and research followed by focused study in digital media, leadership and strategic communication. Students complete two foundation courses followed by focused study across three communication areas a final capstone experience

    COMM 501 — Research Methods in Communication
    Introduces qualitative and quantitative approaches to designing, conducting, and analyzing communication research.

    COMM 510 — Communication Theory
    Explores major theoretical frameworks and ways of knowing in the study of human and mediated communication.

  • Digital Media Communication

    Select 6 hours from the following options:

    COMM 514 — Social Media
    Examines the role, impact, and research applications of social media in contemporary communication.

    COMM 530 — Race, Gender, Class and Media
    Analyzes how media represent and shape intersecting social identities across diverse cultural contexts.

    COMM 540 — Uses and Effects of Media
    Explores how media consumption influences attitudes, behaviors, and civic engagement.

    COMM 580 — Seminar in Communication
    Investigates selected module-specific special topics in communication through advanced theory and research (content varies).

  • Leadership Communication

    Select 6 hours from the following options:

    COMM 561 — Identity and Impression Management
    Examines how individuals and organizations shape perceptions through strategic communication practices.

    COMM 569 — Leadership Communication
    Explores theories and research related to leadership across interpersonal, group, and organizational contexts.

  • Strategic Communication

    Introduces theory and research behind designing, implementing, and evaluating communication campaigns.

    COMM 522 — International and Intercultural Communication
    Examines communication across cultures and its implications for global and diverse organizations.

    COMM 580 — Seminar in Communication
    Investigates selected module-specific special topics in communication through advanced theory and research (content varies).

    COMM 680 — Seminar in Rhetoric
    Explores rhetorical theory and criticism through advanced research and original analysis.

  • Capstone Study

    Select 6 hours from the following options:

    COMM 690 — Communication Pedagogy
    Provides guided experience in teaching and evaluating communication in academic settings.

    COMM 699 — Independent Study
    Pursues individualized research on a selected topic under faculty supervision.

    COMM 701/702 — Master’s Thesis
    Conducts and defends original research under faculty direction.

    COMM 795 — Internship
    Completes supervised field experience applying communication knowledge in a professional setting.
