Community Outreach Research and Learning
The Grice Marine Lab offers a K-12 outreach program based primarily around a mobile “touch tank” with marine animals caught locally, most from Charleston Harbor. We bring a range of animals including horseshoe crabs, blue crabs, sea stars, Diamondback terrapins and more to local schools, camps, and community events. GML staff and students spend time educating K-12 students about the animals and then allow time for handling and questions. The program is limited to events within a 15-mile radius of GML to avoid stress on the animals.
We also offer on-site tours at GML involving a touch tank as well as a microscope demonstration involving plankton and settled marine organisms. Groups are strictly limited to 25 students. GML is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.to 5:00 p.m.
The number of events that can be hosted is limited by staff availability. For more information, please contact Pete Meier, GML Marine Operations Manager.

Conservation Connection
“Conservation Connection” is a podcast hosted and produced by Chance and Sarah Kathryn Ruder, who run the environmental education non-profit Last Chance Endeavors. The mission of the team is “to create opportunities for kids and young adults to learn how to care for our planet, by bringing engaging and educational programs to them, wherever they are.” They first visited Grice Marine Lab in April 2019 to begin a series of profiles of the environmental research being done by GML scientists. They returned in July 2019 to profile the research of students engaged in our summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Episodes will be linked below as they become available!
