The Department of French, Francophone and Italian Studies offers a variety of scholarships for both French and Italian Studies. The value of each scholarship varies depending on the availibily of funds each year.

  • ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE – ARNAUD FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

    This scholarship in French has been given in memory of Philippe Arnaud by the Alliance Française of Charleston to enable students to study in France.

    The recipient must be traveling on a semester-long program.

    Application:
    Submit the paper application and references by the announced deadline to:

    Value:
    $500 available annually for study in France.

    Eligibility:

    ▪ Sophomore standing or higher
    ▪ Declared French major or minor
    ▪ Demonstrated financial need
    ▪ Be a resident of South Carolina
    ▪ Must be participating in a study abroad program approved by the College of Charleston

  • BÉATRICE STIGLITZ TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP

    The Stiglitz Travel scholarship in French has been endowed by Professor Béatrice Stiglitz to enable students to study abroad in France or another Francophone country.

    Preference will be given to students participating in a semester- or year-long study abroad program.

    Value: Dependent on fund availability, may vary depending on the prevailing economic climate.

    Eligibility
    ▪ Sophomore standing or higher
    ▪ Declared French major or minor
    ▪ Demonstrated financial need
    ▪ Must be participating in a study abroad program approved by the College of Charleston

  • Kathleen Hudson Rivers Scholarship

    Kathleen Rivers created this endowed scholarship because of her belief in the intrinsic value of studying abroad and the importance of learning languages from native speakers.

    The Rivers Scholarship will be awarded to students taking French or Italian for study in France or Italy. Preference will be given to students participating in a semester- or year-long study abroad program.

    Value: Dependent on fund availability, may vary depending on the prevailing economic climate.

    Eligiblity
    ▪ Completion of at least four courses in French or Italian
    ▪ Must study in France or Italy
    ▪ Must be housed by native host family
    ▪ Must be participating in a study abroad program approved by the College of Charleston

  • Friedgen Family Italian Study Abroad Scholarship
    Gloria and Ralph Friedgen have been long-time supporters of higher education with gifts supporting the arts, athletics and academics at the University of Maryland, Emory University and The Citadel. The Friedgens have created this endowed scholarship to honor Professors Michael Maher and Marinella Griffith and because they believe in the intrinsic value that will come from an immersive experience studying abroad in Italy.

    Eligiblity
    ▪ Completion of at least four courses in Italian.
    ▪ Must study in Italy.
    ▪ Must be a rising Junior or Senior.
    ▪ Must be an Italian Studies Minor.
    ▪ Must be participating in a study abroad program approved by the College of Charleston.

  • HUGUENOT ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP

    Established by descendants of the Huguenots, the scholarship annually celebrates the lives of these remarkable individuals and to recognize their accomplishments and contributions to the economic, social, religious and political life of South Carolina.

    Value: Dependent on fund availability, may vary depending on the prevailing economic climate.

    Eligibility
    ▪ French Major
    ▪ Must be a rising Junior or Senior
    ▪ 3.0 minimum GPA
    ▪ Student may reapply
