M.A.T. in Performing Arts, Theatre Concentration

Shape the future of theatre education.

Music, theatre, art and dance teachers are in short supply. There are more jobs available in these areas than teachers qualified to teach. Each year, the M.A.T. program produces students who immediately find jobs – in Charleston and across the United States.

Theatre Concentration

The M.A.T. in Performing Arts has a theatre concentration. If you’re passionate about theatre and have a desire to share that passion through teaching, this program is for you!

Successful students have earned a major or minor in theatre or have an undergraduate degree with equivalent experience and training in theatre. You should want to teach but do not yet have a teacher licensure.

In this program, you will build on the skills you already have. You’ll add new skills onstage, backstage and in the classroom.

Most people complete this program in two years or less. If you’re an undergraduate student at the College of Charleston, you should look into the accelerated program.

There are fellowships and graduate assistantships available. You may also qualify for teacher grants and teacher loan forgiveness programs. Speak with the Office of Financial Aid to see how you can use a combination of these options to pay for your degree.

Non-degree seeking coursework

If you want to take coursework, but do not want to earn a degree, you may be admitted as a non-degree student. To learn more and apply, visit the Graduate School website and submit:

  • A copy of professional credentials
  • An official college transcript from an accredited institution documenting the completion of a baccalaureate degree with a concentration in the arts.
