Ordering & Delivery of Research Animals

II. IACUP OPERATIONS

E. Ordering and Delivery of Research Animals

PURPOSE

This Policy is to facilitate the safe delivery, receipt, and conduct of research animals at the College of Charleston.  These procedures must be followed to ensure that appropriate and safe handling and housing situations exist for research animals.

PROCEDURE

  1. Prior to ordering animals, you must have an approved ACUPRA and approval from the Vivarium Director.
  2. The Vivarium Director is ultimately responsible for ensuring that housing space is available and that appropriate cages, tanks, or environments are set up in advance of the arrival of animals.
  3. Once animals are ordered it is the responsibility of the PI to immediately contact the IACUP Director so that arrangements may be made with the Department of Biology Office to receive the animals.  Biology Admins will have the phone numbers of Garrett Milliken (843) 953-5443 and the phone number of the PI.
  4. All animals are to be shipped to:

Garrett Milliken, IACUP Director (and name of PI)
    Department of Biology, Room 245
    Rita Hollings Science Center
    58 Coming Street
    Charleston, SC 29401

  5. Upon arrival Biology Department Staff will contact Garrett Milliken (and/or the PI).
  6. Animals will be moved into the quarantine space in the Vivarium, placed in appropriate microenvironments, and assessed for general health.
  7. If animals are suspected of having health issues the veterinarian will be called to add an assessment.
  8. After thirty days without display of health issues, animals may be placed with other members of their species resident in the vivarium.
