Awards and Scholarships

Awards and scholarships are our way of celebrating your accomplishments and supporting your experiential opportunities. Funding differs depending on class standing, grade point average and depth of engagement in our programs.

Awards and scholarships available in the political science department and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences


Awards and scholarships are our way of celebrating your accomplishments and supporting your experiential opportunities. Funding differs depending on class standing, grade point average and depth of engagement in our programs. 
  • The Alexandria Dengate Memorial Endowed Scholarship
    • Freshman Dengate Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman with a superior high school record and high test scores, who shows academic and intellectual promise and has indicated an interest in pursuing a career in public service at the national or local level. The scholarship, normally $1,500 annually, is renewable for up to four years assuming the recipient maintains a 3.6 overall grade point average.
    • Sophomore/Junior Award: Monies earned in excess of the principal in the Dengate fund are awarded to an outstanding sophomore or junior political science major. Award sums are variable and non-renewable.

  • The Burnet Rhett Maybank Award

    A non-renewable award given to an outstanding rising junior or rising senior from South Carolina. First preference is given to students who are not receiving other College of Charleston scholarships. Award sum up to $2,000.

  • William V. Moore Scholarship Fund

    This renewable award is made to a rising sophomore who has great potential to promote understanding among diverse groups of people and to improve the political, economic, social and/or cultural life of South Carolina. The award, normally $1,000 annually, is renewable up to three years assuming the recipient meets the grade point average requirement. This scholarship will be awarded to a “rising sophomore”.

  • Harper Keeler Award

    A $200 award given to an outstanding rising senior in political science in recognition of her/his academic excellence. This award is non-renewable.

  • John Creed Award
    The John Creed Award was established to provide rising juniors and seniors in the Political Science Department funding to pursue learning opportunities outside the College of Charleston classroom. Examples of learning opportunities include support for academic workshops, conference presentations, internships, and study abroad.

    The John Creed Award will range from $2,500 - $3,000 in an academic year. The award will have three funding cycles with individual awards per funding cycle generally not exceeding $1,500.
    There are multiple application deadlines for this award; the application deadlines for the spring semester is March 15, 2024, and the application deadline for summer semester is April 30, 2024.

  • Experiential Learning Support

    Are you looking for supplemental funding for an internship? Do you want to travel abroad but don't know how you'll be able to afford it? Is there a student conference that you'd like to attend? The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) funds these types of experiential opportunities and invites you to submit an application. Deadlines and applications are available several times throughout the year. We encourage you to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.
