Research

Mathematicians make new discoveries.

Most people don’t think about math when they hear the word research. But, researchers all over the world are making new discoveries in mathematics!

In fact, many of the things you use are around because of advances in math research:

  • Computers.
  • Cell phones.
  • Gaming portals and games.
  • Airplanes and airline travel.

The math department is the perfect size to offer options for students while giving them individualized opportunities for research. Not sure if research is right for you? Some benefits to math research are:

  • Attending conferences and lectures.
  • Networking with other students, faculty and professionals.
  • Working on research and presenting it.
  • Challenging yourself to be creative.
  • Create math!

Our faculty have research expertise in areas including:

  • Analysis, non-linear differential equations.
  • Geometry, topology, and applications.
  • Mathematical Physics.
  • Algebra, representation theory, number theory.
  • Discrete mathematics.
  • Dynamical systems.
  • Probability.
  • Statistics.

Check out our Meet the Faculty page for individual faculty research areas.

If you are a current student interested in conducting research, take the first step and reach out to a professor who shares your interests. Visit the Math Student Hub to learn more.
