What to Expect: First Days - Staff
Your First Day:
On your first day, you will visit the Human Resources Office as instructed in your offer letter - as part of this visit, we'll review your onboarding paperwork, and answer any questions that you may have. In addition, we'll ask you to stop by the Campus Services office where you will get your Cougar Card, and learn about our parking options. Your Cougar Card is much more than an ID. Take a look a the Cougar Card website to see all the ways you can use it!
"Welcome to the College" Orientation:
We are excited to get to know you! Please fill out a short questionnaire and tell us about you by clicking the link below. Your answers will be used in an article on The College Today’s Faculty & Staff New page (https://today.cofc.edu/faculty-staff/) to introduce you to the rest of the CofC community. This form is completely optional. Once you complete the form, you will receive an email scheduling a time for the College photographer to take your new professional headshot, which you can use however you like!
Every new employee will receive an online New Employee Orientation hosted through our Learning Management System (LMS), CougarED. Once in the system, new employees will receive an email notification to take the orientation. This orientation will introduce you to the history, programs, services, policies and benefits offered by the College. The orientation will also include an information flyer that will have important contact information, should you have any questions or need further assistance from representatives at the College of Charleston.
Don’t forget to sign up for a campus tour hosted by our students. What a great way to learn your way around campus! The tours are offered on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Each tour is scheduled to last around an hour. You can sign up for the Campus Tour by clicking this link.
Technology Orientation:
On your first day of employment, you will be scheduled for a one hour session with a Information Technology Help Desk Representative. They will work with you to ensure that you have computer access and that you understand your responsibilities to information security. If you are starting on a Welcome to the College Orientation day,
Your Department Orientation:
Your supervisor will be looking forward to seeing you, and we are sure you will have many questions as you get settled in your new position. Partner with your manager to identify your initial assignments and discuss the mission of your department and how your work fits into that mission. We have prepared a "First Days-20 Question Prompter" to assist you efficiently asking questions to get you information about your new job.
Retirement and Insurance Enrollment:
You will receive two enrollment emails from PEBA to make a retirement and insurance election. Your retirement election is due within 30 days of your date of hire, if no election is made you will default into the SCRS retirement system. Your insurance election is due within 31 days of your date of hire. Insurance coverage begins on the first day of the month following your day of hire, unless you begin work on the first work day of the month.

What to Expect: First Months - Staff
As you continue to develop in your role at the College of Charleston, we hope that you are finding your transition to the College to be exciting and successful. Use the following checklist to keep monitoring your progress.
- Complete appropriate training's (Banner, Finance, Purchasing Card, Safety, Golf Cart, etc.)
- Access and become familiar with the information the Supervisor's Toolbox website if you supervise staff
- Discuss Position Description and Performance Plan with your supervisor and Acknowledge Plan in PeopleAdmin
- Understand Probationary Performance Evaluation Process
- Complete delegated tasks and ask for feedback and/or request additional training as necessary
- Understand the policies, rules, and cultural aspects of your department
- Understand your department's role in the "big picture"
- Attend Campus Tour (generally the last Thursday or Friday of the month-look for emails)

What to Expect: First Year - Staff
As you continue through your first year of employment, you will become more and more adept at your job duties, and hopefully you will start to engage in our dynamic College of Charleston community. At the end of your first year you will receive your formal Probationary Performance Evaluation. Use this checklist to monitor your performance and prepare for your evaluation.
- Touch base with your supervisor regarding your performance and goals on a regular schedule
- Discuss with your supervisor any additional training or assistance you might need and follow-through to get it
- Understand Probationary Performance Evaluation process
- Complete a self-evaluation (if requested)
- Register for Supervisory Training if you supervise staff (schedule will be sent by email)

Directions to The Office of Human Resources
The Office of Human Resources is located in the Lightsey Center at 160 Calhoun Street, Suite B36. If you are coming from St. Philip Street, take a left at the College Bookstore and a right through the first set of double doors. Take the elevator to the basement. HR is located directly across from the foot of the elevator ramp.
The most convenient parking is located in the two city parking garages:
- St. Philips St. Garage - located on St. Philip Street between Calhoun and Vanderhorst Streets
- George St. Garage - located on George and St. Philip Streets
