Classification and Compensation
The state of South Carolina’s Department of Human Resources identifies and sorts positions according to a position classification system. As an agency of the state, the College's positions and policy adhere to this system.
Position classification is a system of identifying and describing the different kinds of work performed within an organization, and then grouping similar positions together under common job titles with an assigned pay band. Each position is assigned to a alphanumerical classification code, according to the types of duties involved and the level of responsibility reflected in the position description, and each of these classification codes are tied to a state pay band. Each pay band includes a minimum salary, midpoint, and maximum allowed salary. This standardized classification system enhances the College's ability to recruit appropriately, analyze our salaries equitably, establish evaluation criteria, and remain compliant with state regulations.
The state provides us with broad specifications for each classification. These specifications can be reviewed in the South Carolina State Higher Ed Classification Manual. These specifications are not to be used to write position descriptions, but are intended as broad outlines of the various classifications. In rare cases, a position may not fit within any classification and may be determined as unclassified.
Accurate, detailed position descriptions provide a consistent standard for hiring, performance management, and advancement. We encourage supervisors and hiring managers to frequently monitor position descriptions and update them to ensure that all of our employees are aware of the expectations of their role.
