Transition to the College of Charleston

The Center for Disability Services (CDS) works with students, faculty and staff to ensure that all students at College of Charleston have equivalent access to campus curricula, facilities, services and resources through universal design, accommodations and creative solutions. Transitioning from High School to College - IDEA vs. ADA

Accommodations at the postsecondary level often look different from high school accommodations. At the postsecondaray level, the Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended in 2008) outlines a college's equal access responsibilities. K-12 schools are governed by the Individuals wiht Disabilities Education Act to implement success-focused accommodations.

Both the IDEA and the ADA protect the rights of individuals with disabilities, but they have different goals. More information can be found at the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund.

Transition Workshops

Transition workshops aim to bridge the gap for students with disabilities transitioning from high school to college and may be targed to students, parents or high school and community professionals. The sessions cover a range of topics, such as understanding the differences between high school and college life with a disability, creating timelines for students to connect with the disability services office, developing transition plans and demonstrating assistive technology.
