Women’s and Gender Studies aims to engage students and affiliated faculty with local and regional communities through educational events, celebrations of student accomplishments, and community-campus partnerships. Goals for our students include exploring a wide range of social justice issues from interdisciplinary perspectives through our diverse curriculum, engagement with scholars from other colleges and universities, and giving back to their communities in unique ways through internships, research, and community activism.
Women's and Gender Studies brings diverse speakers to the College in events that are always free and open public. In past years, Women's and Gender Studies, along with other departments on campus and external community supporters, has brought speakers such as Angela Davis and the Guerrilla Girls to campus. Many other lectures have also been offered on topics such as disability studies, fashion and feminism, and women in the Civil Rights Movement.
Women's and Gender Studies also supports students attending academic conferences and participating in academic research projects. In part through generous gifts, we have supported a number of students who present their original research at academic conferences like the Southeastern Women's Studies Association annual conference. Small travel grants facilitate their ability to gain professional experience in researching, writing, presenting their findings, and networking with students and faculty from other colleges and universities.
Women’s and Gender Studies supports high-achieving students in the major and minor through scholarships that promote activism, community engagement, and commitment to excellence.
