Department of English
Welcome to the Department of English at the College of Charleston!
Studying something that engages and excites you is one of the most practical things you can do. What you study has to resonate with who you are — and when it does, it carries you.
Our graduates are attorneys, physicians, editors, teachers, marketers, novelists, public servants, and technology leaders. They work at Cisco, NBC, BCG, Apple Music, AWS, Eli Lilly, Vanguard, Wiley, Dow, S&P Global, MUSC, and at Charleston's leading legal, cultural, and creative institutions. The story keeps recurring: the skills built in our classrooms have carried them.
Employers consistently say the skills they most need and can least find are the ones an English major is built to teach: how to think critically, write clearly, work across differences, and lead with ideas.
We offer four pathways through the major:
- Literature and Film
- Creative Writing
- Writing, Rhetoric, and Publication
- English and Secondary Education
What you get as an English major at the College: small classes, individual attention from faculty, and a dynamic alumni network. You also get a connected set of professional preparation and experiences that begin in the intro, develop through internship opportunities, and culminate in a senior capstone built around the transition to a career.
