Classrooms

The N E Miles ECDC is a NAEYC accredited Reggio Emilia-inspired school, providing an intentional, emergent approach to educating children that is play-based and child-directed. ECDC is licensed to provide care and education for children from the College campus and community. ECDC has three classrooms devoted for children ages two - kindergarten. Each classroom is led by a master teacher and lesson plans are developed using the SC Early Learning standards and SC CCR Kindergarten standards.

Seashells

Our toddler classroom serves a class size of 12 children ages 2 years to 3 years old. The staff to child ratio is 1:3 in the Seashell classroom.

Sunflower

Our preschool classroom serves a class size of 14-15 children ages 3 years to 4 years old. The staff to child ratio is 1:7 in the Sunflower classroom.

Butterflies

Our multi-aged preschool and kindergarten classroom serves a class size of 20-24 children ages 4 years to 6 years old. The staff to child ratio ranges throughout the day. During small group instruction the staff to child ratio is 1:5 and during whole group instructions may change to 1:10. We balance a play-based emergent curriculum with formalized academic instruction to design whole group activities and more individualized work during small groups and writer’s workshop. All lesson plans and project work are designed around the SC Early Learning standards and SC CCR standards. We look at child development when it comes to learning. Keeping an eye on regulation and executive functioning skills we work to provide the support children need to learn. We analyze behaviors with curiosity and work with students on skill building when it comes to resilience, frustration tolerance, collaboration, mental flexibility, and modulation. When students are not meeting learning goals we implement interventions to better support that student's individual learning style. A variety of assessments are used to monitor progress and reevaluate our approach to best serve the individual needs of our students.
