K-12 Events
The Classics department at the College of Charleston has partnered with the South Carolina Junior Classical League in hosting "Classics Day," a one-day event that features presentations of faculty members on all manner of subjects from the classical world.
Classics Day have been held at the College of Charleston in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2023. CofC faculty also participated in the Classics Day at Furman University in 2019 and at the University of South Carolina in 2022.
Another event hosted by the department is Classics in the Lowcountry. High school juniors and seniors join us for a tour of the College of Charleston's beautiful campus. While they’re here, they learn what "Classics" is. Prospective students have opportunities to visit various types of college classes (Greek and Latin language, history, literature-in-translation classes), meet with the members of the faculty and current students majoring or minoring in Classics, discuss research opportunities, learn about the Honors College, and tour the College’s historic campus.
If you’re a current high school student interested in joining us, contact Andrew Alwine (alwineat@cofc.edu).
Classics Club and Eta Sigma Phi
Our two student organizations in Classics put on events of their own, everything from reading classical works out loud to each other to board game night!
Classical Charleston Lecture Series
Each year, the Department of Classics, supported by the Theodore Guérard Lecture Fund, hosts "Classical Charleston," an annual lecture series. The series brings leading voices in Classics and related fields to campus, enriching the academic life of our community.
SC AIA Society
The department partners with the South Carolina Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America on its annual lecture series and other events that promote the study of archaeology at the College and in the wider community.
