Student Resources
Advising & Support
Regular advising is especially important for interdisciplinary majors, such as Urban Studies, where many courses require prerequisites and are often offered only once per year. You'll be required to meet with your advisor prior to registering for classes. You will not be able to register until you meet with your advisor and they lift the hold on your account.
Once you've declared your major, it's important that you establish regular contact with your advisor, your professors, and with the program director. They can be tremendous resources for you and can help you maximize your college experience.
For example, there might be scholarships, internships, or new sources of financial aid, for which you qualify. To find out what's available – and the eligibility requirements – contact Melinda Lucka Kelley, the program director.
Internships & Additional Opportunities
Part-time jobs, internships, service learning and volunteering will play an integral part in your preparation for the future. The Urban Studies and affiliated faculty and staff will provide you with wonderful networking opportunities.
Extracurricular activities can enhance your classroom experiences. The Urban Studies Club and other organizations on campus will help you hone your leadership skills, help you connect with students who share your interests, and in some cases, expand your academic and leadership experience.
If you choose to study abroad through the Center for International Education you can often find courses that will transfer back to the College and count toward your major.
