Facilities

The SCGIS Lab supports facilities and equipment for the College of Charleston community, including teaching facilities, software, server and networking capabilities, and GIS and remote sensing equipment for fieldwork. These resources are found at its core facility and/or at affiliated labs located throughout the campus.

The Santee Cooper Lab maintains or supports geospatial work in the following affiliated labs:

• Santee Cooper GIS Lab in NSM - 1,200 sq ft space with computer workstations for faculty and student workshops, training, focused research, and coursework including 3-D visualization capabilities.
• Lowcountry Hazards Center - Workstations with GIS/remote sensing capabilities as well as an HTC cluster which runs on the web of computers located within the lab. The lab's cluster has a total of 18 systems, each equipped with a 6-core Intel i7-8700K CPU clocked at 3.7 GHz, 64 GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 2666 MHz, 1 NVIDIA Quadro P1000 4GB GPU, and a 1024 GB SSD. These computers combine to form an effective 108 CPU core, 1152 GB RAM, and 18 GPU compute cluster. This cluster is used exclusively by the SCGIS lab as well as the Lowcountry Hazards Center.
• Computer Labs in NSM - two computer workstation rooms, 24 stations in each room, smart room technology with projectors for classroom instruction
• Center for Aqueous Remote Sensing - Seven Supported Systems
• Center for Social Science Research Computing Lab - 15 workstations and map plotter, dedicated to spatial and complex computational research in the social sciences and humanities. An additional, adjacent classroom is equipped with 18 similarly configured workstations for formal classroom instruction.
• Additional Computing Resources - one GIS/remote sensing capable computing room at Grice Marine Laboratory at Fort Johnson and ArcPro availability on the Computers in Addlestone Library.
