Academic Courses
Think Globally.
To help develop and foster an understanding of international perspectives, students must complete a minimum of 18 hours (6 courses) of international/global academic study.
Courses acceptable for meeting the requirements for Global Scholars must:
- increase knowledge of foreign countries or cultures.
- increase understanding of inter-country relations or practices.
- be centered around global issues, themes or conflicts.
Requirements
- Students must take a minimum of 18 hours of coursework
- Coursework must represent at least three academic departments
- Students must maintain an overall 3.0 GPA
Eligible courses
Courses that count toward the Global Scholars designation deal with the international world, the planet or the environment. Recognizing that curricula are dynamic, there is not a single, finite list of eligible courses from which to choose.
Instead, we offer these guidelines/reminders:
- Eligible courses must focus on some area of inquiry outside our region or country.
- Area studies, history, political science, and anthropology courses (among others) regularly deal with international issues.
- Historic preservation, urban planning, biodiversity, and marine biology (among others) emphasize global themes.

Foreign language courses that fulfill the General Education requirement are not eligible. Grammar, composition or conversation courses are also not eligible.
Content courses in literature, culture, or linguistics at the 300 and 400 levels fulfill the requirement for Global Scholars courses.
