Reaffirmation of Accreditation

The College of Charleston's accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is currently under review. In November 2024, SACSCOC approved the College for a Differentiated Review Process, reducing our required standards to only 40, or about half from 2017.

      Dear Colleagues:

This is an update on our 2027 Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmation efforts.

As you may know, the College of Charleston must complete a comprehensive, decennial peer-review process to ensure we are in compliance with SACSCOC accreditation principles and US Department of Education requirements.

A few key milestones on our work to date:

      • In November 2024, we were approved for a “differentiated” review, reducing our required standards to only 40, or about half from 2017.
      • In April 2025, relevant faculty/staff writing groups were charged with composing draft reports for all 40 requirements.
      • In spring 2026, these writing groups completed their first drafts.
      • Currently, an outside consultant is providing feedback on these drafts, and we are on track to complete the final compliance report by June.
Looking ahead, we will host a SACSCOC staff advisory visit on June 29-30, 2026, and a visit by an on-site reaffirmation team in February 2027. In preparation, the following colleagues have agreed to serve on our institution’s Reaffirmation Steering Committee:
Mark P. Del Mastro, Co-Chair, Office of the Provost
Mark Berry, Co-Chair, Office of the President
Calvin Blackwell, SB (Economics), QEP Director
Alicia Caudill, EVP for Student Affairs
Amy Goble, Office of the Provost
Chris Korey, Office of the Provost Michelle McGrew, Office of the President
Gia Quesada, SB (Supply Chain Management), Assistant Provost for Assessment
Jordan Ragusa, HSS (Political Science), AA Fellow
Scott Peeples, HSS (English), FAculty Secretary

      Colleagues:

The College of Charleston is gearing up for its SACSCOC reaffirmation in 2027. In preparation, this past November we had applied, and were approved for a “Differentiated Review Process,” which means the College will only need to address 40 SACSCOC core requirements and standards, or approximately half the workload from 2017. Our Reaffirmation Writing Groups are already in place as formally charged back on April 18, and their preliminary reports will be completed by mid-August 2025. We are also pleased to announce that we have streamlined the process thanks to the thoughtful collaboration of many, which means less work ahead for those involved. Finally, we want to thank you for your ongoing contributions since our last reaffirmation as we look ahead to a successful outcome in 2027. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

      Sincerely,
Mark P. Del Mastro, SACSCOC Liaison
Maddox Johnston, Director of Survey and Accreditation Research
