Get a head start on your college journey with SPECTRA — a fun, immersive summer experience designed to help you make a smooth transition to life at the College of Charleston.

From July through August, you'll live in a campus residence hall, take for-credit courses and participate in workshops and labs that will set you up for success when the fall semester begins. 

Beyond the classroom, you'll explore Charleston, meet new friends and take part in social activities that will make your first college experiences unforgettable.

SPECTRA Program Essentials


Get a head start on college life academically, socially and personally with a summer you'll never forget.
  • Eligibility & Requirements

    SPECTRA is open to incoming first-year students only.

    To participate in SPECTRA, you must:

    • Be accepted to the College of Charleston for the fall semester
    • Have paid your enrollment confirmation fee
    • Have completed New Student Orientation in June of July before the SPECTRA program begins
    • Complete and submit the SPECTRA Program application.
  • Academics

    SPECTRA students get an early start on college academics by taking two for-credit humanities courses during the summer session.

    • Expect about three hours of class time each day, plus workshops, labs and special presentations that support your success.
    • Faculty mentors are here to help you build the confidence and skills you'll need for your first semester
  • Living on Campus

    Get the full college experience. 

    You'll live in the residence halls for the entire SPECTRA session, weekends included.

    All participants are expected to take part in the coursework, labs, workshops and structured activites that make this program so rewarding.

  • Program Costs

    Here's the best part: Tuition, housing and meals (on the College meal plan) are covered by SPECTRA.

    You will just need to cover:

    • Books and supplies
    • Personal expenses
    • Meals not included in the College's meal plan

  • Can I participate in SPECTRA without attending CofC in the fall?

    No, you must be attending the College of Charleston in order to participate in the SPECTRA Program.

  • Can I stay in my dorm after SPECTRA ends until my fall move-in day?

    No, you must move on the assigned SPECTRA move-out day.

  • Am I considered a CofC student during SPECTRA?

    While you will be taking CofC classes and using CofC amenities during the SPECTRA Program, you are considered a camper. This means that you will have to abide by both the CofC Student Code of Conduct and the SPECTRA Program Handbook (which you will receive closer to the program start date).

  • Are we allowed to have visitors during the program?

    We kindly request that you refrain from having visitors during the program, as one of its primary objectives is for you to establish relationships and build a sense of community with your peers attending the program without interruption.

    If, for some reason, an item needs to be brought to you, you will need to notify SPECTRA staff so that they can work with whoever is bringing you something to make sure it gets to you

  • Are we allowed to leave during the program?

    If there is any reason that you may need to leave campus, you must obtain approval from the SPECTRA staff. We ask that you refrain from leaving campus due to the fast-paced nature of coursework, pre-planned events, and activities. Please note that it is the expectation of the program that you remain on campus for the entire duration of SPECTRA.
