Interpretive Signage

These signs reflect the Committee’s research into the past histories of sites that are now part of our campus. By telling the stories of individuals and groups that were once marginalized or misremembered, the College furthers its present mission as a welcoming, inclusive university.

Septima Clark Auditorium

In 2023, the CCL installed a mural in honor of Septima Clark in the lobby of the Education Center, next to a lecture hall that had been named in Clark’s honor in 1987.

Inside the classroom, we installed large interpretive panels introducing students to eras in Clark’s life, especially her connection to Charleston and sites near our campus.

In 2024, the CCL completed the SPC Auditorium with a wall dedicated to others who have worked to improve their society, as Clark did. These panels tell the history of Clark’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), which includes staff, faculty, and students from CofC, and a history of student activism at C of C. They also showcase winners of contests for students who interpreted Clark’s legacy through poetry, visual art, and service/activism.
