Archaeology, history, literature, philosophy, and more
You do not have to learn Greek or Latin to study Classics! Each semester we offer a battery of courses that are taught through translations. This means that while you’ll be studying the Greeks and the Romans, you’ll do it in English.

Here is a sampling of the sorts of courses you can take in the Classics Department.

Introductory
The Classics Department offers a variety of introductory courses that are available to all students and assume no prior knowledge. These courses cover topics such as:
- Ancient Greek culture and society
- Classical mythology
- History of the Greeks and Romans
- Classical Archaeology
- Medical Terminology
- History of Rome

Intermediate
We also have courses that are a little more specialized than the introductory surveys. These include topics such as:
- History of Rome
- The Archaeology of Athens
- Comedy
- Racism and Slavery in Greece and Rome
- Epic (The Iliad, the Odyssey, The Aeneid, etc.)

Upper-level
If you want to get in really deep, you can do that, too! The excellent teacher-scholars of the Classics Department faculty offer specialized upper-level courses such as:
- Houses and households in the Greco-Roman world
- Horror in art and literature
- The archaeology of the Bronze Age (Mycenaean Civilization, Minoan Civilization, etc.)
- The Roman revolution
- The history of democracy from Athens to America
