Archaeology, history, literature, philosophy, and more

You do not have to learn Greek or Latin to study Classics! Each semester we offer a battery of courses that are taught through translations. This means that while you’ll be studying the Greeks and the Romans, you’ll do it in English.

Here is a sampling of the sorts of courses you can take in the Classics Department.
  • Introductory

    The Classics Department offers a variety of introductory courses that are available to all students and assume no prior knowledge. These courses cover topics such as:

    • Ancient Greek culture and society
    • Classical mythology
    • History of the Greeks and Romans
    • Classical Archaeology
    • Medical Terminology
    • History of Rome
  • Intermediate

    We also have courses that are a little more specialized than the introductory surveys. These include topics such as:

    • History of Rome
    • The Archaeology of Athens
    • Comedy
    • Racism and Slavery in Greece and Rome
    • Epic (The Iliad, the Odyssey, The Aeneid, etc.)
  • Upper-level

    If you want to get in really deep, you can do that, too! The excellent teacher-scholars of the Classics Department faculty offer specialized upper-level courses such as:

    • Houses and households in the Greco-Roman world
    • Horror in art and literature
    • The archaeology of the Bronze Age (Mycenaean Civilization, Minoan Civilization, etc.)
    • The Roman revolution
    • The history of democracy from Athens to America
