Growing up in a slave owning family Angelina and Sarah Grimké turned their backs on their home and family to begin a crusade on fighting injustices to women of the day and those enslaved. Follow in the footsteps of these two courageous women and discover how life in Charleston was for both the privileged elite and the enslaved masses. The tour will highlight locations and events related to the women, divulge untold stories, complete the tale of the Grimke sisters, and show how these two women shaped future generations.
Sue Monk Kidd’s bestselling novel, “The Invention of Wings” (January, 2014), has brought the story of the Grimké Sisters to light and inspired this walking tour through downtown Charleston. Though known as unconventional abolitionists and feminists in their day, Angelina and Sarah Grimké have remained obscure in American history and (mostly) unrecognized in Charleston, city of their birth.

The Abolitionist Movement was an organized effort to end slavery. The first leaders of the campaign, which took place between 1830 and 1850, mimicked tactics British abolitionists used to end slavery. Though it started as a movement with religious underpinnings, abolitionism became a controversial political issue that divided much of the country. Supporters and critics often engaged in heated debates and violence, even deadly confrontations. In part, the divisiveness and animosity fueled by the movement, along with other factors, led to the Civil War.

Distance: You will walk approximately a mile and a half.

Parking: Coming from Meeting Street turn right on Queen Street, and the Queen Street Parking Lot is on your left across from 82 Queen restaurant. If that lot is filled, you can continue on Queen Street and cross over King Street. There will be another garage on your left.

    THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Love, heartache and the passage pf time are woven together with music in a mesmerizing journey – from the meet-cute to the break-up and then somehow right back to the start again. This freshly reimagined staging showcases Manny Houston and Heather Rice in a passionate and intimate take on one of contemporary theatre’s most beloved musicals that has just the right amount of schmaltz.

Program: “Seniors and Seniors” brings high school seniors and CCR members together to share life-changing theatrical experiences. The program cultivates community and inclusion by engaging these two groups in cross-generational conversations about the world we all live in. They will attend a weekday matinee performance followed by a discussion of the play over lunch.

Lunch: Sandwiches, salads, sides, dessert, drinks.

Parking: There is a parking deck across the street, and street parking may be available. Carpooling is advisable.

You can learn more and purchase tickets for this performance at the Pure Theatre website.
