Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education

The MAT in Early Childhood Education at the College of Charleston:

  • is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than teacher education; 
  • prepares candidates for South Carolina licensure for teaching Pre-Kindergarten through grade three.

The entire application process is online. The documents outlined below are required components of the application. A file is not complete until all documents have been submitted and processed, so read carefully and prepare your application materials in advance of applying.

  • Admission Criteria

    • Official transcripts from all academic institutions; minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 
    • Official Praxis Core Score that reflects a passing grade 
    • Official TOEFL scores if your primary language is not English 
    • Professional résumé and two letters of recommendation regarding your academic work/experience (one from someone who has observed you working with children). 
    • A statement of purpose describing why the candidate seeks to pursue the M.A.T. program and a career in teaching.  
    • Statement of ability to perform essential teaching duties under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Why earn your M.A.T. in early childhood education at the College of Charleston?


You will participate in intensive, supervised field experiences across multiple grade levels. You also have the opportunity to learn from master teachers at our university lab school. You'll experience the NE Miles Early Childhood Development Center, which serves children ages two through kindergarten
 
In the Early Childhood MAT program, you will take courses in child development. You'll learn about theory, family and teaching methods. Particular emphasis is placed on observing and interacting with children and families from diverse backgrounds. You will leave prepared to inspire, lead and advocate for young children and their families in a variety of settings
