MBA or EMBA?
Which program is right for me?
Same Degree, Different Logistics
College of Charleston offers students an MBA degree in two formats:
- the traditional, one-year, full-time MBA
- the executive, 18-month, hybrid EMBA
Both programs require the same high admissions standards, follow similar rigorous curriculum and confer the same MBA degree. The delivery and structure of the programs differ to meet the needs of different student types.
What is a one-year MBA?
A one-year MBA is a full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) program for students with fewer years of work experience. Instead of completing a degree in addition to working full-time, one-year MBA students typically leave their jobs to attend school or attend directly earning their undergraduate degrees.

What is an executive MBA?
An executive MBA program, also known as an EMBA program, is designed for students who are further along in their careers and want to continue working full-time while in school. Schedules vary among programs, but most offer part-time formats like weekend classes. At the College of Charleston, EMBA students earn the same MBA degree as our full-time MBA students, just in a different format.

Choosing between the Executive and One-year MBA
There are several fundamental differences and similarities between an executive MBA and traditional MBA program. If you’re still undecided, start by asking yourself the following questions:
- How many years of professional experience do I have?
- What are my goals?
- Am I happy in my present role and/or company?
- Where do I want to be after my MBA?
- Would my company be willing to support me with time out of the office for an Executive MBA?
- What skills am I looking for?
- At what pace do I want to complete my degree?
