Report

The faculty Committee on Student Affairs and Athletics met virtually during the 2021-2022 and conducted much of their business via email, due to not being able to find common meeting times that worked for all members. Aside from the recurring project to select the Alexander Chambliss Connelley Award winner for the College, the committee did not have too many tasks on its agenda. In our first meeting (Oct 27, 2022), Alicia Caudill, Executive VP of Student Affairs, discussed the committee possibly weighing in on a couple of topics, but ultimately were never consulted. Those topics were the possibility of making fentanyl test strips available on campus and working with the Black Student Union on a list of issues they have been working on with College Administration over the last few years.

In addition to making a recommendation for the Alexander Chambliss Connelley Award winner, which I discuss below, the committee helped the Office of the Dean of Students revise the nomination and selection process for the Dean’s Awards. In this process, we advocated for more time for nominations to be made and more time for selection committees to review nominees and select a winner. We also asked for an addition to the nomination process which asks the nominators to speak directly to the qualifications of the award. These changes were approved and adopted.

Alexander Chambliss Connelley Award

The Committee received and considered four nominees for the award. Because of the impressive records of service to the College and community demonstrated by all nominees, the decision was not easy. However, in the end, the Committee forwarded Aliece Hurley as the Alexander Chambliss Connelley Award winner for 2022-23. We felt her service to the College and greater Charleston community best embodies the spirit of the award.
