Scholarships and Awards

The Department of English is proud to recognize and support the achievements of students. 

  • Conseula Francis Annual Scholarship: The English Department, the African American Studies Program and the Avery Research Center have honored our beloved former colleague’s achievements by establishing the Conseula Francis Scholarship Fund to support a student at the College of Charleston concentrating in African American Literature or African American Studies. The Department's English Alumni Awards are funded by faculty and alumni donations. As donations grow, we hope this program will fund a range of scholarships to support student success. An award of $1250 is currently available for Spring semester 2025 and is renewable for the following academic year.  Applications due Friday, November 22nd. 

 

  • English Alumni Award: Study Abroad is a $500 award that seeks to support students in an approved summer study abroad program. Preference will be given to those students who have enrolled in a program that is directed by a faculty member of the English Department or one in which an English Department faculty member is teaching. Applicants must be English majors and have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. Financial need, though not a requirement, will be taken into consideration.  Applications due FRIDAY, FEB 7th, 2025.

 

  • English Alumni Award: Financial Need is a $500 award that seeks to supports financially disadvantaged students who show promise of academicdemonstrate excellence in the study of English. Applicants must be English majors, have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need. Applications due FRIDAY, FEB 7th, 2025.

 

  • Lancelot Minor Harris Scholarship is an award of $4,600 that seeks to support incoming, first-year, or second-year students from traditionally under-represented populations (such as first-generation, African-American, Hispanic, and financially disadvantaged students), who show significant academic potential and intend to major in English.  The scholarship is renewable up to four years as long as the student majors in English, is enrolled full time, and maintains a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5. Not available during this cycle. Current Recipient: Grace Harvey

 

  •  Marilyn Shiely Coste Memorial Scholarship is an award of approximately $1,800 that seeks to support students who have been innovative and strategic in the way they have combined their major with extracurricular opportunities, such as sustained involvement in community literacy outreach programs, professional internships, sustained work as a tutor, or achievement as a published writer.  Eligible students must be English majors at the sophomore or junior level and have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.  This scholarship is renewable up to a maximum of two years after the initial award as long as the student remains enrolled full time, maintains a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0, and continues to be involved in sustained and meaningful extracurricular activities. Not available during this cycle.   • Nan Morrison Scholarship is an award of $2,500 that seeks to support incoming or first-year students in financial need, who show significant academic potential.  The award is renewable up to three years as long as the student maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and continues to major in English. Not available during this cycle. Current Recipient: Ava Ratcliff

 

  • Marjorie Elizabeth Peale Memorial Scholarship is an award of approximately $2,000 that seeks to support financially disadvantaged students at the freshman or sophomore level who show promise of academic excellence in the study of English.  Eligible students must be English majors, have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need.  The scholarship is renewable up to a maximum of 3 years after the initial award as long as the student is enrolled full time and maintains a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. Not available during this cycle. Current Recipient: Caitlyn Dorn

 

  • Macy Ezell Cooke Scholarship The Cooke scholarship is an award of approximately $900 and bestowed twice a year—once for Fall semester and once for Spring semester—to support students writing a Bachelor’s Essay or an Independent Study project.  It is awarded each term to the student whose project is deemed especially promising, innovative, or academically substantial. Students who plan to attend graduate school in the humanities are strongly encouraged to apply for this scholarship. Your BE or Independent Study proposal, which should be prepared according to the guidelines available below, will serve as your application for the scholarship.  Applications for the Spring term Cooke scholarship must be submitted to Cougar Scholarship Award System by Wednesday, January 22nd.     • Your proposal, which should be prepared according to the guidelines found on the Hub (student opportunities page, under scholarships & awards). All submitted proposals will automatically be considered for this scholarship.
