The program includes academic study, cultural enrichment, experiential learning, and pre-professional mentoring and leadership development.

Required courses include:

  • ENGL 110/111: Intro to Academic Writing
  • AAST 100: Intro to African American Studies
  • AFST 101: Intro to African Studies
  • Capstone: currently exists as a not-for-credit experience with plans to propose as a course in the future

Eligibility

All students are eligible. Recruitment for the next cohort occurs during the spring/summer of the preceding academic year, during which time most new cohort members are expected to be selected. Two (2) slots will be reserved and filled during the fall semester. Only first year students enrolled in FYSE 114 or who participated in the most recent SPECTRA program will be eligible for consideration. Both the FYE course and SPECTRA are open to all students. A cohort typically consists of 10 funded students. Colonial Scholars and Sankofa Scholars will be invited to participate as unfunded Legacy Scholars.

Legacy Ambassadors (peer mentors) will be recruited from among all College of Charleston students meeting academic eligibility requirements.
