Former editor in chief of National Geographic Traveler and executive editor of National Geographic magazine, George has been a writer, editor, and content director for more than two decades. Twice nominated for the National Magazine Award as editor of Traveler, George is the author of two books for National Geographic—From Mist and Stone (a history of Celts and Vikings) and Raging Forces: Life on a Violent Planet (a chronicle of natural disasters)—and has written and edited articles that have received awards and nominations from the Society of American Travel Writers (Lowell Thomas Award), the North American Travel Journalists Association, and the American Society of Magazine Editors. As an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston, George’s academic focus is on the information ecosystems of tourism destinations and businesses. He teaches courses about multiplatform strategic communications in travel & tourism, including aspects of content creation, brand development, and visual storytelling, as well as studies in the journalistic work of researching, reporting, and documenting place-based narratives.
