John joined the Academic Advising and Planning Center at the College of Charleston as Associate Director in January of 2019. John works in providing support to the Director and staff of the AAPC. In addition to providing direct advising to a cohort of degree-seeking undergraduate students, John’s areas of responsibility include managing the daily operations of the AAPC, supervision of both professional and paraprofessional staff and assessment of services. Prior to CofC, John worked at the Indiana State University Division of Student Affairs as Assistant to the Vice President (2016-2019), where his responsibilities included assessment, fundraising and development, communications, marketing, public relations and special events and projects.
Before joining educational services on campus, John’s career focused on academic services for student athletes at several NCAA Division I institutions including the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, Georgia Tech, and the Universities of Oklahoma and South Carolina, while working with both men and women across various sports (2007-2016). Prior to working in higher education, John worked in government and legislation at both the state and federal levels (2000-2005).
John’s degrees include a Bachelor of Science in History from Indiana State University and a Master of Education in Adult Learning and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma. Some of John’s career highlights include membership in five different national professional organizations. Among those memberships, John has served on or chaired more than a dozen committees or subcommittees. He has presented original content at conferences and taught full semester, credited course on college success. John has raised thousands of dollars for various initiatives and scholarships, has been recorded in the federal Congressional record of the Library of Congress and while working at Indiana State, was selected as the 2017 Fraternity Advisor of the Year.
John resides in Hanahan, SC with his wife Susan, a native of Charleston and early childhood educator in the Charleston County School District. John and Susan have two children; Tilly (Age 6) and Craig (Age 5). Fun Fact: An avid college sports fan, John has attended intercollegiate sporting events on the campuses of at least 50 different colleges and universities across the nation, spectating fourteen different men’s and women’s sports at all three levels of NCAA competition.
