Middle Grades Education

As a middle grades educator, you will have an impact. In this critical period of adolescent development, your students will look to you to motivate them to stay on the right path. Discover if this major will inspire you to lead in the classroom. Some graduates may work in nonprofit organizations or the Peace Corps.

Why study middle grades education at the College of Charleston?

You will select two content areas of concentration. Study child development. Learn from a mix of traditional lectures and practice. Create effective classroom environments and connect with diverse learners. You'll get hands-on experience in public school classrooms. Our program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Program Highlights


You'll choose two distinct content areas. You may choose English language arts, math, science or social studies. You'll focus on your two areas to develop your expertise in child development. You'll get hands-on experience in public schools.
  • Hands-On Learning

    You will take part in classroom field experiences. You'll observe and interact with instructors and students. You'll advance your knowledge of middle grades education.

  • Internships & Clinical Experiences

    Our program offers you a variety of internship opportunities. You will take part in a student-teaching clinical experience in your second semester of senior year.

Careers & Outcomes


Our graduates are exceptional teachers who prepare the future. You'll be ready to teach fifth through eighth grade students. Graduates take roles as lead instructors in public or private high schools both locally and nationally. You'll have every opportunity to make a difference and have a real impact on your community. You'll be ready to be a skilled classroom teacher or to pursue a career outside of the classroom. Be a teacher, a Peace Corps volunteer, an education administrator, a social worker or a nonprofit leader.
