Early Childhood Education Major

As an early childhood education major, you'll develop the leadership and technology skills you need to be successful. You'll learn how to be a skilled classroom instructor. You might pursue a career outside of the classroom. With a degree in early childhood education, you can join a wide range of fields. You may work in education, administration, social work and nonprofit organizations.

Why study early childhood education at the College of Charleston?

The College has strong partnerships with elementary schools in the surrounding counties. You will be able to connect with students and teachers in the area as you develop your skills. You may get hands-on experience by working at the on-campus early childhood development center. The College is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)and is recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

What will I learn?

You will conduct research and gain valuable skills to take into the classroom. You'll be mentored by our dedicated faculty as you learn to become a teacher yourself. You'll take courses on education foundations, childhood development, language development, integrating technology and more.

  • Hands-On Learning

    Our program utilizes hands-on learning through multiple classroom field experiences. You'll interact with instructors and students to develop your knowledge of early childhood education. Additionally, you may work at our on-campus early childhood development center!

  • Internships & Clinical Experience

    The School of Education offers students a variety of internship opportunities. You will complete a student-teaching clinical experience in the second semester of senior year.

Careers & Outcomes


Students in the early childhood education program are actively recruited by South Carolina schools. We prepare you to take on a pre-K through third-grade lead instructor position with South Carolina schools and across the nation.
