Visiting Professor, Electrical Engineering

Rod Goodman was born in London England. He received his BSc degree with Honors in Electrical Engineering from Leeds University, Yorkshire, UK, and his PhD in Electronics at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. Dr Goodman is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and a Chartered Electrical Engineer and Fellow of the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Dr Goodman is a US citizen.

From 1975 to 1985, Dr Goodman was a member of the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hull, UK. In 1985, he joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he was Professor of Electrical Engineering until 2001. He was also the founding PI and Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center for Neuromorphic Engineering at Caltech. Since then, Dr Goodman has been a founder of several successful start-up companies and has provided consulting services on hardware, software, and algorithms in the areas of Electronic Nose Technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Ad-hoc Data Networks, Facial Recognition, Bayesian Analytics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr Goodman holds positions as Visiting Professor at the University of the West of England, UK, and at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Dr Goodman is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, https://charleston.edu.

Dr Goodman has expertise in the areas of embedded electronic systems, VLSI design, neural networks, electronic nose technology, robotics and machine consciousness, swarm systems, distributed sensor communications networks, ultra-wideband and ad-hoc wireless networks, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. He has consulted for various government and commercial organizations in both the US and the UK and has founded six advanced technology R&D companies in both countries.

His honors and awards include two NATO Senior Scientist awards, a Research Fellowship of the UK Royal Society, the Marconi Premium Award of the UK IEE, and the 2008 Carnegie Trust Centenary Professorship. Rod Goodman has published over 150 technical papers and patents in his areas of expertise (his Erdos number is 2). He is also a keen sailor, and an accomplished singer, actor, and guitarist.
