Jewish Studies Major

Jewish studies is a major that builds skills. It provides you with a toolbox that will prepare you for any career path. In this interdisciplinary major, you'll develop the competencies employers want to see in new hires. You'll cultivate skills in writing, critical thinking, research, digitizing, intercultural fluency and more.

Connect with your peers in the Jewish Studies Center. The center includes a lounge, Jewish Student Union and is home to Marty's Place, our kosher, vegan and vegetarian dining option.

Program Highlights


Acquire a sophisticated understanding of Jewish experience. We believe the Jewish story offers the best lessons in innovation, creativity and adaptability. You'll study the history, religion, philosophy, literature, sociology and language. Our major is among the most flexible. 
  • Hands-On Learning

    Explore philosophy, law, Jewish life, Hebrew language and literature in a hands-on environment. You'll develop an armory of useful skills. Learn to process, interpret and analyze first-hand the components that create the Jewish experience

    Internship Opportunities
    We have a variety of internships available that can be tailored to your interests. Our goal is to help you gain unique insights into your desired field of practice. You'll have the opportunity to work with one of our Centers of Excellence or Hillel. You may also intern with local professionals from our Jewish Studies Advisory Board. Recent students have also interned in areas such as:
    • academic research.
    • communications.
    • education.
    • event planning.
  • Study Abroad

    We sponsor many study abroad opportunities to Israel through trips and exchange programs. Recent faculty-led exchange courses have included "Tracing the Holocaust" and "Doing Business in Israel." You'll also have the opportunity to study abroad at Tel Aviv University in Israel and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

  • Location

    With history dating back to the mid-17th century, Charleston was once home to the largest Jewish population in North America. You'll access historical sites in Charleston and beyond. Our Jewish Heritage Collection offers opportunities for research using firsthand accounts and other primary sources.

Careers & Outcomes


You'll graduate with a range of skills that are easily transferred to professional life. Many of our students continue on to graduate studies. Internships, travel and research will prepare you for any path.

About the Minor


This interdisciplinary minor is perfect if you are interested in history, literature or culture. It is a way to study the interactions of peoples from ancient times to the present.
